How to create ringtones for your iPhone from existing songs in iTunes.

Note: Following instructions and folder paths were done using Windows XP.

· Go to Start>Control Panel>Folder Options>View

· Make sure “Hide extensions for known file types” is not selected.

· Open iTunes

· Go to Edit>Preferences>Import Settings…

· Import Using “AAC Encoder”

· Select “OK” to close Import Settings window

· Select “OK” to close Preferences window

· Search for the song you want to create a ringtone for under the “Music” tab.

· Right click on the song you want to use as a ringtone and select “Get Info>Options”

· Select the “Start Time” and put the time you want to start for a ringtone (such a verse or chorus line) and add 30 seconds from the Start Time and put that time in the “Stop Time” field

· Select “OK”

· Right click on the song and select “Create AAC Version”

· You will now see two versions of the song: the full version and the 30 second version.

· Go to My Documents>My Music>iTunes>iTunes Music>Artist Name>Album Name

· Select the song you just created and hit “F2” to change the file type from “m4a” to “m4r”

· It will ask you if you want to change a file name extension. Select “Yes”

· Your file name will have a .m4r file extension.

· Double click the file and it will open in iTunes in the Ringtones folder and play just the time frame you selected in the Start and Stop Time of Get Info.

Next time you sync your iPhone the ringtone you just created will be on there.
